Taking it all in
25 Aug 2011
If someone describes herself as unyielding and easy-going in the same breath, then we know it’s going to be an interesting interview. YCC caught up with European YCC 2011 Visual Arts winner Sofia Stergiopoulou from Greece to talk about the daily pleasures of living – and, of course, the YCC win and Sofia’s own sources of inspiration.
What are some of your favorite things to do, see or experience?
Ordinary things, such as enjoying an afternoon in the garden, petting my cat, engaging in a nice conversation with an interesting person, and music and cinema.
What, who or whose work inspires you? Were there any particular influences for YCC?
I love Andy Warhol’s directness, Oscar Wilde’s honesty, Mark Johns’ surrealistic simplicity and David Lynch’s dreamy aesthetic.
As for my YCC project, I tried to keep it direct and simple.
Is there anything you want to tell us about your creative process and how you developed the YCC project?
The idea for the poster dawned on me as soon as I finished reading the brief. What was asked was very specific, so I translated it into shapes!
What do you think is the most valuable thing about participating in YCC 2011?
The most valuable thing about YCC is that the entries are judged by professionals who are distinguished in their respective fields. To have your work praised by these people is quite unique for any student.
How do you feel that winning YCC 2011 in Visual Arts might change your outlook, creative approach or prospects for the future?
I am very pleased and I already feel more confident about my work. Winning a competition on such a large scale is definitely a boost for my morale and a great motivation to continue working harder.
Do you have any special plans over the next year?
Over the next year, I’m planning to continue my studies (at Omiros in Greece). I’m looking forward to learning even more and honing my skills through my courses and other artistic endeavors.
YCC congratulates Sofia and all 2011 winners, both European and national, once again!
