Dreams really do come true
31 Aug 2010Fashion is most definitely her passion and Jungeun knew from an early age this is the world she belongs in. Introduced to textures and patterns by her mother, who teaches knitting and crochet, Jungeun credits her for igniting her love of fabrics and designs.
Jungeun’s creativity often strikes in bed, just before she falls asleep. The darkness and calm help her concentrate. When she has a good idea, she writes keywords on her phone to remember her fabulous ideas the next day. “Sometimes, if I’m lucky, I dream of the ideas I was thinking about before falling asleep”.
There was a vivid debate to select the winning outfit, but the jury agreed that Jungeun’s project really stood out: "This project is sexy and the designer has created her own print – it's very innovative. The project is edgy, risky and very on trend."
We wanted to found out more about Jungeun and her winning outfit, so we asked her some questions about her dazzling piece and also got some insight for upcoming trends.
How do you feel when you heard you were the European winner for Young Creative Chevrolet for fashion?
My friend called me up to tell me I had won the 1st prize! I didn’t believe her and thought she was joking. I realized it wasn’t a joke when I saw my outfit on the YCC website. I was really surprised and kept thinking “wow”.
What encouraged you to participate in the YCC competition?
My professor in styling, Kenza, advised me to take part in this art contest. I liked the concept and went for it! I have a lot to thank Kenza for because she has guided me all through my 2nd year at Esmod fashion school, where I've just finished my 2nd year.
Had you participated in any contests prior to YCC?
Yes, I participated in "Jeansation by Monte Carlo" with my class and "International student competition by Miami fashion week". I was one of the five finalists in the Miami fashion week competition. It was an excellent experience.
How long did it take you to finalize your project?
It took me about ten days from the initial idea to the final outfit. The last three days were full of hard work and very stressful because just before the deadline, I had a problem with the fabric. It was awful, but fortunately one of my classmates helped me find a solution at the last minute - thanks Manu!
What was the main inspiration behind your design?
I was inspired by the aerodynamic lines of the Chevrolet Volt. The Volt has a silhouette like the path of air or water. I was inspired by the line on the road, the highway, curves, crossing ways, and even the tyre tracks. To make the atmosphere of the road colors come alive, I limited myself to two colors: black and white. At the same time, I felt strongly that monotones would add the effect of metal, machine and technology.
Career-wise, what would be your dream?
I want to work for a designer or a brand that is on the same page as me and has a simple, clear cut but not boring view of fashion and can move people. Right now I want to learn as much as I can; there is still so much to know.
What are your favorite brands or companies and who would you like to work for and why?
I have already worked at Lafuma, where I was an intern and made the costume for the theater "3 soeur" with my friends. There are several brands I would like to work for, such as Ralph Lauren or Stella McCartney. Their collections are just perfect!
Who is your favorite fashion designer?
I love Sandra Backlund’s collection; she is a Swedish fashion designer. I think she is pure genius. I like her designs because you can really see her talent shine through with her collections. I also, like her knitwear. http://www.sandrabacklund.com/
What do you think will be the biggest trend in 2011?
I think neutral colors will continue to be a big trend.
Describe your style.
I try to find a simple look with a characteristic stand out piece. I 'm not a fan of extravagant or exaggerated design. My favorite outfit is a large knit pullover.
